Subscribing/Feeds

What is this

When we say “subscribe” to TWS, we don’t mean get something in the mail, whether it be the snail or e- variety. We’re talking about something also labeled as “feeds”, “syndication” or “XML.”

All of which are related, sometimes synonymous terms, talking about the availability of a document or documents published by our site that you can use to find out about updates without having to remember to come back here every day or every week.

A lot of sites publish a feed, many of those sites publish multiple feeds, which allow you to get updates on the main postings or a specific type of content or both. Podcasts also explicitly use a certain kind of feed to send you files the program you use can download for you — the audio or video file part of the podcast.

Great, now what?

You can read feeds with a “feed reader.”

Some web browsers (like Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer 7) have basic ones built in.

Some web sites and web services, like your My Yahoo! page or the Customized Google Home page can use them.

Programs like NetNewsWire, FeedDemon, NewsMac Pro, NewsFire, Sage, and many others can read them. And so can programs like iTunes or Democracy Player, for getting podcasts.

Search around to find out more and pick one or some of these tools to use the feed(s) from this and other web sites.
